One of the best things about being a grad student at the University of Arkansas for me is the exposure and interaction that I have with students. Especially through my graduate assistantship and other activities I partake in, it is nice to be still be involved and recognized as a student.

One of my favorite activities that I partake in when I feel stressed is to set up my hammock somewhere on campus, or at nearby Lake Wedington and read a book or take a nap. It is nice to get out of the office and classroom and take in the great nature around Northwest Arkansas and even on campus. Another activity that I enjoy is driving with loud music. It is nice to just get lost on the round and explore the state that you live in.

When it comes to surviving grad school, one piece of advice that I can offer you is to always put self-care first! It is important to get your work done and honor your commitments, but if you are not at your 100% best and taking care of yourself, you cannot give other projects or commitments your all. Make time in your daily schedule to focus on your wellness- whether that be working out, meditating or another activity, you are important and you matter!

My new found favorite study place in Fayetteville would be Doomsday Coffee. Located on College Ave. right behind Rick’s Bakery, it is a new local coffee shop owned by Veterans. They offer a student discount and GREAT Coffee and food. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a cool and new environment to study.

My best kept secret for saving money as a grad student would be to shop in bulk and with friends. Shopping in large quantities and then splitting the groceries with your peers has helped me cut down a lot of my cost on food. It is a fun activity to do on the weekend, especially heading to Sam’s Club on Sundays for samples, and a great way to keep some extra cash in your pocket as a student!
