Deciding where to pursue your undergraduate and/or graduate career can be a daunting task. Through my experience of searching for an undergraduate university, and recently a graduate program, I have found that the best way to find out if a program or a school is a good fit or not, is to schedule a campus visit and go on a tour of campus!

When you schedule a campus visit you have the opportunity to experience where you could potentially spend the next couple of years. It also gives you a chance to meet with faculty and staff members from the university and get to know the department that you are interested in. This helps you decide if you can see yourself in the program. It is also a great way to put a picture and feeling to the numbers and statistics of the schools you have researching.

When I visited the University of Arkansas during the spring of my junior year of high school, I knew that this was where I wanted to spend the next four years. It was my fourth university campus visit. I met with the department heads of the biology and German department – and they provided me with answers to the lingering questions I had. In addition, the trees were blooming on campus and I fell in love with the rolling hills of Northwest Arkansas. I could image myself walking across campus as a student!

Campus tours are typically led by current students, which is wonderful because it gives you, the prospective student, a chance to ask questions that an admissions staff member would perhaps not know the answer to. As an international student ambassador and graduate ambassador, I always ensure that I answer questions asked during the tour honestly, so that a prospective student has all of the necessary information to make the right decision for his or herself!
