My name is Selina and I am a junior at the University of Arkansas. I am double majoring in biology and German, and my hometown is St. Louis, Missouri, also known as the “gateway to the West.” After completing my undergrad at Arkansas, I plan on attending graduate school in order to pursue a career in physical therapy.
Choosing what university is the best fit for you is never an easy choice, so I am going to tell you a few reasons for why I chose the University of Arkansas. Since I knew I wanted to double major in biology and German, it narrowed down my choices quite a bit. I was looking for a research university that had a reputable science department and a strong German department. Arkansas met these criteria, and the head of both departments took the time to talk to me while I was on my campus visit. In addition to the university having a history of strong academics, I wanted a fairly large university with a history of traditions. I found all of this at the U of A!
Getting involved is a wonderful way to meet people with similar interests. It also helps you find your place when everything is new and unfamiliar. There are countless options for getting involved as a student. I am personally on the Student Health Advisory Committee, an Honors College Ambassador, and a member of the Red Cross organization on campus. No matter what your interest, there is a place for you!
Not only is the University of Arkansas a fantastic school, but the campus and the city of Fayetteville have so much to offer. My favorite place on campus is Old Main Lawn. It is located behind Old Main and is a quiet, grassy area that is perfect for a break during a busy day. In the evenings, you will see families bring their pets and enjoy the weather. The second floor of the main library has tables in-between the bookshelves. This is ideal if you want your peace and quiet while studying. This is where I spend most of my time when I have a lot of studying or work to get done.
One of the best kept secrets in Fayetteville is a Mediterranean restaurant located near the historic downtown square. Petra Café is a very small restaurant, perfect for when you are in the mood for some really good, flavorful Mediterranean food. The historic downtown square is one of my favorite spots in Fayetteville. On Saturdays from April to November, there is a farmer’s market where local farmers and business sell their produce and goods at small stands. You will hear musicians, and dogs from the local animal shelter are always waiting to be pet. This is a great way to relieve stress and take a break from your studies.
The University of Arkansas is a fantastic university and the city of Fayetteville has so much to offer. It has become a second home to me and I know it will for you as well!
