At first, I was not sure of what pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Arkansas was going to be like. I had fears, doubts, and questions that needed answers. I wondered how I was going to cope in a new environment. I used to believe that school was all about academics and nothing more. I was the kind of student who gave about 85% of my time to schoolwork and cared so little about other important aspects of student life which are also necessary to create a balance. But coming to the University of Arkansas, I now have a better understanding.

Indeed, all work and no play, makes Mary a dull girl! I went to the University Recreation Center (UREC) with a friend once, and I was really impressed with what I saw! Right there, I understood the importance and impact of physical wellness on academic performance. When I feel good physically, and my mindset is right, my academic performance will most likely improve. I went on to start using the fitness center at the U of A and I am so glad I made that decision. Not only did I start using the fitness center, I now take interest in watching our famous Razorback games. I remember going to see the female Basketball team play and I enjoyed it thoroughly because “Pig, Sooie!” won the game.

Another great decision I made as a student at the U of A was joining a Registered Student Organization (RSO) on campus where I gained valuable friendships and found great minds to share ideas with. I now have friends who are more like family to me. We share ideas and hang out together. I also got the Governor’s award after volunteering some hours to my campus community. Isn’t that amazing? Being part of organizations where my ideas are valued and utilized makes me feel valued.

“Adjusting to a new environment which was an initial concern quickly faded when I met and made good friends who have helped me navigate a good path.”

I have met with friendly and amazing people. I was privileged to spend last Thanksgiving with an amazing American family. At first, I was skeptical about how it would feel meeting a family I knew nothing about. Eventually, it didn’t feel like I was meeting them for the first time: they were so warm and kind. That singular event changed my mindset about people. Adjusting to a new environment which was an initial concern quickly faded when I met and made good friends who have helped me navigate a good path. Nice people who are ready and willing to show me around town and suggest the nice places to eat, shop, and relax. So sweet!

The University of Arkansas has given me many opportunities to spread my wings and fly, and I am very glad I made the decision to pursue a master’s degree in this great school.
