Studying abroad is an exciting adventure! Being aware of customs and knowing a bit about the everyday way of life in the city you will be living in, can help you adjust easier.
In many countries, taking public transportation is the best and the easiest way to get around. Public transportation is not as wide-spread in the U.S. and unless you find yourself in a very large city, you will most likely travel places with a car. The U of A transit is a bus system that you can use to get to the university and other places around town, but it does not take you everywhere.
Unless you have a car, be prepared to get creative with how to get around. A bike can be very helpful, but keep in mind that there are hills!
When studying abroad, you usually try your best to fit in and look like a local. Being aware of cultural faux pas can help you do this! One thing to be aware of when eating a meal at a restaurant is to tip your server! While not necessarily mandatory, it is a very customary thing to do. In America there is a standard percentage that one tips and then depending on the service you can tip more. A standard tip to your waiter or server for a meal, is about 15%-20% of the bill. If you were very pleased with you service, you can tip more if you would like. If you are choosing to do carry-out and not have a sit-down meal, you can choose whether or not you would like to tip. Many Americans choose not to.
