Life in Fayetteville slows down during the summer, but there is still plenty of fun to be had for students and their family who stick around.

Every year after the spring semester ends, traffic disappears and the city may seem quite empty (especially when compared to graduation season a few weeks before). However, many students, including graduate and international students, remain in town and may be seeking some regular entertainment. Fortunately, Fayetteville is full of hidden gems when it comes to cheap or free activities.

If you are looking for something free to do in the area, here are three of the best things to do in Fayetteville this summer.

First Thursdays on the Fayetteville Square

While First Thursday technically begins before summer begins, and runs through fall, it really is a staple of summer in Fayetteville.

On the first Thursday of each month, hundreds of people make their way to the historic downtown square for an evening of live music, food and drink vendors, special events and more.

Each month features a different theme, such as ‘Summer of Love’ on June 6, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, or IndepenDANCE of July 4 to celebrate Independence Day.

Admission at this pet-friendly event is free, of course, making it a great summer activity to put on your calendar that the whole family can enjoy!

Gulley Park Concert Series

gulley-park-series

Now in its 23rd year, the Gulley Park Concert Series is a large live music and food truck rally located in one of Fayetteville’s most loved and spacious parks.

Every two weeks, a different band or artist will host a lively show in the center of the park. Artist genres range from folk and bluegrass to jazz and funk and beyond.

Come prepared with a lawn chair or blanket, as well as your appetite since there will be plenty of great food vendors to sample when you take a break from dancing.

Terrific Tuesday Nights at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks

Located in one of Fayetteville’s most beautiful locales, Terrific Tuesday Nights features activities including concerts, garden walks, and more.

Running from early June to late August, this family-friendly series is free to the public (although guests are invited to make a donation).

Events in 2019 are varied and include everything from the NWA Ballet Theatre Dance Beat pop-up show to an Enchanted Garden Walk with harpist Beth Stockdell. There is even a “Dog days of summer” night, which means your canine companions are allowed inside the Botanical Garden grounds – for this one night only!

Summer Fun is All Around

Fayetteville is full of opportunities once summer arrives, and these are just a handful of suggestions.

Local restaurants and shops, swimming areas at our many lakes and riverbanks, hiking and cycling trails and more are all just a bit less crowded now that many students have gone home for the summer.

Take advantage of this time to explore the area beyond campus. By the end of a fun-filled summer, you will feel more like a local than ever!
